Processing large Threat Emulation messages causes high memory usage and DLPU crashes
Product
Threat Emulation
Version
R81.20, R82
OS
Gaia
Last Modified
2026-07-23
Symptoms
- Gateways performing Threat Emulation (TE) may experience increasing memory usage in user‑space processes such as DLPU, FWK, and TEmain.
DLPU memory may grow to tens of gigabytes, which can cause the DLPU process to stop and lead to TE interruptions or instability.
Cause
The TE daemon may send very large, serialized messages to DLPU, each up to approximately 1 GB in size. During deserialization, these messages can expand significantly in memory, leading to extreme transient memory usage within DLPU potentially up to 30 GB.
Although the memory is released after processing completes, repeated handling of such large messages can result in sustained high memory consumption and may cause DLPU crashes.
This issue is due to a product defect in how DLPU handles large TE payloads.
Solution
This problem was fixed. The fix is included starting from:
- Check Point R82.10
- Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator for R82 starting from Take 118
Check Point recommends to always upgrading to the most recent version.
If you choose not to upgrade, Check Point can supply a Hotfix. Contact Check Point Support to get a Hotfix for this issue.
A Support Engineer will make sure the Hotfix is compatible with your environment before providing the Hotfix.
For faster resolution and verification, please collect CPinfo files from the Security Management Server and Security Gateways involved in the case.
Hotfix installation instructions:
Refer to sk168597 - How to install a Hotfix.
NOTE
This solution has been verified for the specific scenario, described by the combination of Product, Version and Symptoms. It may not work in other scenarios.
